Getting a Thai motorbike licence on Koh Samui (and riding legally on Phangan and Tao)
Last checked 17 October 2026 · General information, not legal advice
Almost everyone on the islands rides a scooter, and police checkpoints for licences and helmets are common. Here's how to ride legally, whether you're visiting or living here.
Visiting: International Driving Permit
Visitors can ride with an International Driving Permit that includes the motorcycle category (A), issued in their home country, carried together with their home licence. A car-only IDP or licence doesn't cover motorbikes.
Without a valid motorcycle licence you can be fined at checkpoints — and, more importantly, your travel or health insurance may refuse to pay after an accident.
Living here: a Thai motorcycle licence
Residents usually get a Thai licence from the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Koh Samui has a DLT office; people on Koh Phangan and Koh Tao usually go to Samui or Surat Thani.
Typical documents: passport with a valid visa, proof of address (a certificate of residence from Immigration or your embassy, often with your TM30), a medical certificate from a clinic issued within the last month, and photos if asked. Requirements vary between offices — call ahead or check the DLT's booking system.
The process usually includes a short training session or video, eyesight and reaction tests (colour, depth perception and braking reaction), a written theory test (available in English) and a practical riding test on a course. If you hold a valid foreign motorcycle licence or IDP, some offices let you skip the riding or theory test.
The first Thai licence is a temporary one valid for two years; you then renew it for a five-year licence.
Riding safely on the islands
Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger. Thailand drives on the left.
Samui's ring road is fast and busy; Phangan and Tao have very steep hills and some unpaved roads, especially after rain. Ride within your experience.
